Downstream of Luxor, the riverside city of Aswan is less well known than its popular neighbour, but no less fascinating.

The River Nile is wide and slow flowing here, making it one of the best places to enjoy a lazy afternoon on the river. Many of the river cruises we work with also start or finish from Aswan - ideal for those wanting to spend more time on the water and use the cruise as a way of seeing the ancient monuments along its banks.

Just outside of the city, and accessed by a short flight, are Aswan’s most famous monuments, the awe-inspiring Abu Simbel temples. These UNESCO-protected rock-hewn masterpieces simply have to be seen to be believed, and are made even more impressive when you learn that they were moved up a hill, in their entirety, to prevent them from being submerged following the creation of the Aswan Dam. Another temple well worth a visit is the Philae Temple.

To break up all the temple touring, we recommend also visiting a local Nubian village, which we can arrange for you to do with one of our local guides. You might also like to visit the Nubian Museum to learn more about this fascinating ancient ethnic group.
