Regions in Nicaragua

Explore the colonial splendour of Granada (the oldest city in the New World) and the natural beauty of Lake Nicaragua, San Juan del Sur, the Emerald Coast, Ometepe Island and the Corn Islands - a real haven for passionate nature lovers. For the adventurous, take in the smouldering volcanoes, lush green rainforests and exotic wildlife along the way for an ideal Nicaraguan escape.

With an area the size of England, Lake Nicaragua is Central America’s largest lake. Kayak amongst monkey mangroves, trek the volcano, and make the short journey to Granada, to explore the cobbled streets and colourful colonial architecture of the New World’s one-time trade hub.

Some 70 kilometres off the coast of Nicaragua in the Caribbean Sea, the Corn Islands offer fantastic snorkelling and surfing, and some of the best diving in the world. Once a haven for pirates and buccaneers, the beautiful beaches are still pristine, with fantastic surf, whilst the fishing villages have a laidback Caribbean vibe.

Lolling in a crescent-shaped bay on the Pacific Coast, San Juan del Sur gives you a real but charming glimpse of Nicaraguan life. Colourful buildings dot the waterfront, people sit in rocking chairs on their verandas, children play football along the shore, and some of Central America’s best beaches are within easy reach.

Formed by two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua, Ometepe Island is a nature-lover’s paradise. Rainforest mountain slopes lead right down to the beautiful beaches and are home to white-faced Capuchin monkeys and the Jesus Christ lizard.

This stunning 30-mile stretch of coastline fringes the mighty Pacific Ocean from the surfing hotspots of Popoyo and Astillero in the north to San Juan del Sur in the south, with sweeping white-sand beaches and majestic emerald-green mountains and volcanoes.
