Mexico is famous around the world for many things, from marching mariachi bands to fiery tequila. Perhaps the most recognisable symbol of Mexican tourism, though, is the Mayan site of Chichen Itza, one of many fascinating pre-Hispanic sites in the country. This itinerary is perfect for you if you’re into Mesoamerican history, with the opportunity to explore a great number of Mayan and other pre-Hispanic ruins. Equally, with a range of food and drink based options on offer, including chocolate tours of Mexico City and mezcal tasting in the Oaxaca Valley, it’s a fantastic itinerary for gourmands too. After settling in in the capital city, you’ll continue to the ruins and mezcalerias of Oaxaca before taking in the beautiful colonial architecture of Merida. Your trip ends with five nights of beachfront relaxation in Tulum, on Mexico’s beautiful Caribbean coastline.
Perfect forFoodies and history buffs.
In the knowConsider adding a couple of days in the city of Campeche, for yet more colonial architecture and Mayan ruins.

Mexico City

2 nightsMEXICO CITY

Your journey begins in the Mexican capital, where you’ll spend two nights in the fashionable Colonia Roma district at the luxury boutique hotel La Valise. Mexico City has a fantastic food scene, and a range of tours and activities are on offer to help you explore it. On your first evening, settle in with a private Mexican dinner, paired with Mexican beers and wines. Central America is, of course, the home of chocolate, and you’ll have the chance to sample plenty of the stuff on a gourmet tour through the city. After stopping off at the murals of renowned artist Diego Rivera, you’ll head to the iconic Café Tacuba restaurant to learn about the production of mole sauces. Then it’s on to the artisanal chocolatier Que Bo, and the Mucho Mundo Chocolate Museum, where you’ll learn about chocolate’s millennia-old history.

Oaxaca

3 nightsOAXACA

The next stop on your journey is the colonial city of Oaxaca, around an hour’s flight from Mexico City. You’ll spend three nights here at Casa Oaxaca, a stylish boutique in the centre of town. The nearby archaeological site of Mitla can give you your first experience of Mesoamerican culture, and is famous for its intricate mosaic work and its fusion of pre-Hispanic and Catholic elements. Afterwards, continue through the Oaxaca Valley to the ‘mezcaleria’ towns, where mezcal has been distilled from agave plants for centuries.  Also nearby is Monte Alban, a mountaintop historic site once home to Mixtecs and Zapotecs and oen of the largest Mesoamerican cities at its peak.

Merida

2 nightsMERIDA

Next up, you’ll pay a visit to the beautiful city of Merida, whose historic centre is home to some fantastic colonial architecture – make sure you check out the 15th-century Cathedral of San Ildefonso. Your home for two nights in Merida is Casa Lecanda, a beautiful hotel in the historic city centre which combines the comfort of a luxurious modern home with an elegant colonial aesthetic. Your time in Merida also means yet more opportunity for archaeological exploration. The ruins of Dzibilchaltun are home to crumbling pyramids, rainwater wells, and the somewhat creepy Temple of the Seven Dolls, so named for the small effigies that were found there, each presented with a different physical deformity.

Tulum

5 nightsTULUM

Departing Merida, you’ll pay a visit to one of the most astonishing places in Mexico, if not the world: the Mayan archaeological site of Chichen Itza. This remarkably well-preserved city dates back almost 1500 years and is today the most recognisable symbol of the Mayan civilisation. On a guided tour, you’ll visit sites like the Great Ball Court, the observatory and the famous El Castillo pyramid. After exploring Chichen Itza, you’ll continue on to your last stop, Tulum, on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. Your five nights here will be spent at Jashita, a beautiful boutique hotel set on its own stretch of white sandy beach. You may choose to spend the end of your trip simply relaxing, swimming with sea turtles in Soliman Bay, or exploring the wildlife-rich Sian K’an reserve; the Mayan ruins of Tulum are made all the more evocative by their location, overlooking the ocean.
