Regions in Costa Rica

Offering a dizzying collection of outdoor activities, zip line in the Central Valley or walk around the lava-spitting volcanoes in Arenal. Try your hand at sailing or surfing just off the southern coast, go scuba diving in the warm Pacific Ocean or watch hatchling turtles scurry to the sea on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast.

The mighty Arenal Volcano is undoubtedly one of Costa Rica’s best known attractions, and a hike up the neighbouring Cerro Chato offers fabulous views, before reaching a shimmering lagoon in the sunken crater at the top. The region remains a popular hub for its exhilarating adventure activities, cascading waterfalls and bubbling hot springs, though the volcano is no longer active.

If you’re searching for a tropical coastline which has great amenities but also secluded beaches, look no further than a holiday in the Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio. With a winning combination of gorgeous sandy beach, lush jungle trails and diverse wildlife, it’s no wonder why Costa Rica’s smallest national park has always had strong appeal.

The city of San Jose is often overlooked; however, a short stay in the capital at the beginning or end of your holiday will present a fascinating insight into a world where modest colonial architecture and commercialism have collided, as well as art-galleries and museums depicting the country’s indigenous heritage. Head just beyond San Jose, into the highlands and Central Valley, and you’ll see Costa Rica’s natural beauty really comes into its own.

Warmed by the Caribbean Sea, Tortuguero, meaning ‘land of the turtles’, is one of the most important nesting sites in the western hemisphere for the endangered green turtle. To get to it, there’s no road access, so we recommend a magical boat trip down the Caribbean Coast canals, passing sloths and monkeys on the way.

A holiday along the Northern Pacific Coast has it all; tropical rainforests, volcanoes and some of the best surfing beaches in the world. Spanning the north-western corner of Costa Rica, the Guanacaste province boasts beautiful stretches of beach, great diving, and superb places to chill. Surfers, yoga lovers, and anyone on a health kick will love it here.
