Perfect forCouples wanting a peaceful beach retreat and for families or a group travelling together who wish to book the whole house during their stay. This is also one for architecture buffs who'd like to make a pilgrimage to architect Geoffrey Bawa's 'Last House'.

Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Th Last House is near the Mulkirigala Caves - with direct access to Mawella Beach, in an area famous for its turtles.

Rooms at The Last House

The beautiful rooms and suites, located either in the main house or in the gardens, display the signature Bawa touch, with whitewashed walls, canopied beds with mosquito nets, ceiling fans and bright splashes of colour. There is no air conditioning, but the interiors are designed so that you can enjoy the cool breeze from the sea.

For the biggest and best, consider the Cinnamon Hill Suite on the upper floor of the main house: it has a double room and two twin rooms and the master bedroom is enormous, with a large ensuite bathroom, and a wraparound balcony overlooking the gardens and the beach, which provides a romantic setting for private dining.

Food & Drink

As expected of a hotel so near to the beach, your evening meals at The Last House revolve predominately around seafood and might start with an ocean crab salad with spicy coconut sauce and end with a crispy skin snapper fillet with pandan steamed basmati rice and dahl sauce.

Lunch tends to follow along the same lines with a variety of salads incorporating locally-caught lobster, prawns and tuna, while breakfast is a hearty spread of fruit juices, eggs, pancakes and cereals, accompanied by Sri Lanka’s renowned teas and coffees.

Enjoy the variety of dishes on offer all freshly prepared and served in the main dining area or in the privacy of your room.

Facilities

As well as a lovely pool in the gardens, bicycles and surf boards, as well as croquet, snorkelling, fishing and sporting equipment, are all available for hire at The Last House. There is also an opportunity to indulge in an Ayurvedic, Thai or Indian massage.

Make the most of the pretty courtyards and verandas, all mixed amongst the brightly coloured decor and surrounding lush green vegetation - ideal spots to relax and unwind.

Activities at The Last House

If you are interested in wildlife, head to Yala National Park for its high concentration of leopards, be surrounded by the large herds of elephants at the Udawalawe Reserve, or visit the Turtle Conservation Area at Rekawa by night to see turtles lay their eggs in the sand.

You could also join the whale-watching safaris that leave from Mirissa, only 45 minutes away, or simply stroll along the nearby Mawella Beach, keeping a close eye out for the telltale signs of pods of dolphins or breaching whales.
