Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Set in a century-old mansion in a tranquil setting surrounded by lush plantation gardens, Horathapola Estate is not far from the hustle and bustle of Colombo, yet a stay at here is a step back in time to the days of 19th-century colonialism.

Rooms at Horathapola Estate

Horathapola is home to five spacious bedrooms with large bathrooms. The interiors combine touches of modern luxury with the traditional elegance of colonial design, with antique furniture, hand-carved four-poster beds and polished wooden floors. All rooms look out over the garden and feature a private patio, veranda or balcony. The Family Lodge offers ultimate seclusion and has a roof terrace from which you can gaze out over the estate.

Food & drink

Dining here is a personalised affair, with each guest welcome to sit down with the chef face-to-face to discuss their personal requirements and preferences. Vegetarian and western dishes are happily offered, but the speciality is in traditional, rural Sri Lankan dishes, including authentic curries cooked in clay pots or thalis served on banana leaves. In keeping with the colonial feel of the hotel, afternoon tea is a tradition, with fresh delights like homemade cheesecake served alongside organic local teas.

Facilities

There's a lovely outdoor saltwater swimming pool, secluded and surrounded by trees, as well as a Jacuzzi. There's also a library and a large lounge, looking out across the garden and the pool - perfect for relaxing in between exploring the area.

Activities at Horathapola Estate

Go on a tour of the estate and its plantations in a traditional bullock cart, enjoy a guided tour of the nearby village, or borrow one of the hotel's bikes to explore, and discover the serene temples and bustling markets of the Sri Lankan countryside.
