Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Dolphin Beach sits on the Kalpitiya Peninsula on the western coast of Sri Lanka, and is surrounded by water: the Indian Ocean on one side, and the Puttalam Lagoon on the other. The area is correspondingly verdant, with palm trees as far as the eye can see.

Rooms at Dolphin Beach

Dolphin Beach’s 7 luxurious tents were designed by experts from Rajasthan, the home of glamping in India, and they do have an air of the luxury safari tent about them, if not the desert setting. They each feature large verandas, complete with a hammock to lie back in and take in the view. Tents are air conditioned and feature wood, stone and fabric furnishings, and combine a feeling of adventure with all the luxury and comfort of a hotel room. Tents are either Double or Family – the latter contain 2 double beds so are ideal for families with up to 2 children.

Food & drink

Authentic Sri Lankan cuisine is the order of the day at Dolphin Beach, cooked in time-honoured style and served in traditional clay pots. Dinner is offered in a multi-course buffet format, with a range of traditional Sri Lankan dishes to choose from. At lunchtime, Sri Lankan white and red rice accompanies an array of vegetable, meat and fish curries and other dishes, while breakfast comprises a buffet of Western and Sri Lankan offerings.

Each of the tents has a private treatment area next to the bathroom where private massage and spa treatments can be enjoyed by arrangement. There is also a beautiful large outdoor infinity pool, which seems to melt away into the Indian Ocean. Dolphin Beach is a great place for kids of all ages, and they love the sand garden on the beach. It’s also pet friendly, and food can be provided for your pets with prior notice.

Activities at Dolphin Beach

Between May and October, this is as good a place as any in the world for kite surfing. A sea safari to the nearby Bar Reef will take you past whales and dolphins en route to some of Sri Lanka’s best snorkelling. If you’d rather explore the water at your own pace, kayaks are available to borrow from the hotel; fishing can also be arranged. Wilpattu National Park is around 90 minutes’ drive away and offers opportunities to spot elephants and leopards; safaris can be arranged in advance.
