Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

Coconut Lagoon, a CGH Earth hotel, recreates a traditional village atmosphere in a beautiful waterside setting on the shores of Vembanad Lake in Kumarakom, with its own pristine forest grove, and cows (a rare local breed) roaming the landscape. It can be reached by boat via its private jetty a kilometre upstream.

Rooms at Coconut Lagoon

The distinctive, historic bungalows, mansions and villas have been recreated and restored from ancient Keralan wood houses or 'tharavads', which were once the family homes of the nobility. Painstakingly recreated by skilled local craftspeople, using age-old techniques without the use of nails, each one is unique, and they feature traditional hand-carved furnishings and colourful Indian fabrics.

There are balconies with comfortable chairs and hammocks for relaxation, and the spacious lakeside villas, set on a secluded stretch of waterfront, have generous verandas and private plunge pools to cool off in.

Food & Drink

Experience the way in which goods are transported by water here, and get a taste of local life with a cup of tea from the floating tea shop. This is also an excellent opportunity to taste local specialities, including fresh seafood and fragrant curries, with coconut a staple of the tasty cuisine.

Enjoy the catch of the day at the Vembanad Grill, and linger over a candlelit dinner at the Aymanam restaurant. Try the meen moilee, a traditional fish dish, cooked in a clay oven and served on a banana leaf, as you are entertained with a Keralan dance performance – the hotel has a regular traditional culture programme. For another memorable evening meal, dine in the paddy fields by the lagoon.

Facilities

Have a swim or while away an afternoon by the lakeside pool, laze in a hammock, and indulge mind, body and spirit in the Ayurveda centre, which offers soothing herbal massages, or unwind with some yoga or meditation.

Activities at Coconut Lagoon

Stroll through the butterfly garden, where you’ll see a variety of colourful butterflies, and go birdwatching – there is a bird sanctuary nearby, and you can discover the birds of Vembanad Lake with an expert naturalist.

Go on a village walk, head out on the canals in a traditional canoe, explore the waterways with a local fisherman, or enjoy a memorable sunset cruise, accompanied by music.
