For many non-Indians, it’s also the first point of introduction to the country. On this luxury adventure holiday, you’ll begin in Mumbai before heading deep into the jungle-covered heart of India, first at Bhoramdeo and then at Kanha Tiger Reserve, supposedly one of Kipling’s main inspirations for the stories. Your journey ends in Delhi, India’s ancient and storied capital.

2 nightsMUMBAI

Your adventure begins with some urban sophistication before you head into the jungle, with a couple of nights in Mumbai. The home of Bollywood and Indian celebrities, Mumbai has a long history and is home to some of the finest colonial architecture outside Calcutta. There are ancient Hindu caves at Elephanta Island, one of India’s grandest hotels in the Taj Mahal Palace, and sculptures, artefacts and artworks from across Indian history at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya museum. If you’re already tired of city life and want to get out into nature straight away, head to Sanjay Gandhi National Park, where brightly-coloured plants and trees are inhabited by exotic birds, butterflies, monkeys and leopards; in 2003, evidence was even found of a wild tiger roaming the park.

4 nightsBHORAMDEO

Departing Mumbai after 2 nights, you’ll fly to Raipur and be privately transferred to Bhoramdeo, where your jungle adventure begins in earnest. You’ll spend 3 nights at Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat, a collection of lovely cottages in a traditional, rustic-chic style in the heart of the Chhattisgarh jungle. Owner Sunny is a local who knows the wildlife and culture of this region like the back of his hand, and will lead you on treks where you can spot the rich wildlife who make their home in this unspoilt area. This includes wolves, nilgai antelope, hyenas, leopards and tigers, as well as a rich variety of birdlife including hornbills, paradise flycatchers and scarlet minivets. Sunny will also take you to nearby villages, where you can meet local people and experience their traditional way of life. Also nearby is the Bhoramdeo Temple, a complex of monuments to the Hindu god Shiva which dates back almost a thousand years.

3 nightsKANHA

After 4 nights in Bhoramdeo, you’ll be taken by private transfer to Kanha, around an hour and a half’s drive away. One of India’s most important tiger reserves, Kanha is an area of rolling meadows and thick forests, which apparently served as one of Kipling’s main inspirations when writing The Jungle Book. Other animals which live here include leopards, sloth bears, and Indian wild dogs. You’ll spend 3 nights at Singinawa Jungle Lodge, a luxurious collection of cottages and bungalows with an unrivalled location for experiencing the park. Dawn and dusk jeep safaris are a great way to see the forests at their most alive, while guided walks are great for experiencing the jungle up close. The lodge also has a museum, where the artworks of local Gond and Baiga people are exhibited.

1 nightDELHI

After 3 nights exploring the forests of Kanha, you’ll be privately transferred to Jabalpur for a 90-minute flight to Delhi. India’s ancient capital has seen a lot over the centuries, with Mughals, Turks, Afghans and many more coming and going, their empires rising and crumbling around the city. As a result, there’s no shortage of cultural and historical attractions to feast your eyes on, from the huge 17th-century Jama Masjid to the opulent Hindu temple Akshardham, opened in 2005 – evidence that Delhi’s dual love affair with the sacred and the worldly is as much of the present as of the past. The Mehrauli Archaeological Park contains fascinating relics of medieval Muslim architecture, which can also be found at the famous Red Fort and the brilliantly preserved Humayun’s Tomb. You’ll spend one night the Claridges, an elegant 1950s hotel in the heart of the city.
