Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Dating from the 15th century, Borthwick Castle is among the most impressive historic keeps in Scotland. It sits on a knoll, surrounded by dark forest and a small river, the Gore – in other words, a postcard-perfect Scottish castle - and just 30 minutes from Edinburgh.

Rooms at Borthwick Castle

The castle’s 12 lavish ‘bedchambers’ live up to their archaic name with an opulent design in keeping with the castle’s noble origins. Think four-poster beds beautifully carved from dark wood, huge freestanding bathtubs and vintage chandeliers, with rough stone walls and soft lighting adding to the historic atmosphere. The Cottage and Gatehouse allow for even more privacy out in the castle grounds.

Food & drink

There’s no set menu at Borthwick Castle, with meals arranged according to your wishes. The food therefore varies widely, from light lunches to Middle Ages banquets, with the finest Scottish game, suckling pig, hearty pies and more enjoyed in the grandiose Great Hall and accompanied by ales, wines, and other traditional tipples. The 1430 Bar and Castle Cellar have a huge selection of drinks, while afternoon tea can be enjoyed in the beautiful State Room.

Facilities

In-room massages, facials and other wellness treatments, as well as Pilates and yoga classes, are all on offer to help you unwind in this beautiful setting.

Activities at Borthwick Castle

Find out more about the castle's illustrious past on a history tour, and enjoy all manner of classic Scottish country activities, including forest walks, archery, laser clay pigeon shooting, fencing and lawn games. After exploring the great outdoors, whisky and gin tastings in the atmospheric cellar are a perfect way to end the day.
