Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

Santa Ponsa is one of two hotels in the domaine of Fontenille Menorca (the other is Torre Vella), which sprawls across 300 hectares, showcasing architectural heritage and local culture, with attractive Spanish and Moorish influences. It is set amidst landscapes of olive trees, vineyards and rocky coastlines, and the domaine is also home to horses, donkeys, goats and turtles.

This historic former palace was rebuilt in the 19th century, and the tiered gardens are overflowing with exotic flowers, giant fig trees, palm trees and orange and lemon trees.

Rooms at Santa Ponsa

The beautiful, naturally styled rooms and suites are in the main house, the original barns, and in independent houses in the expansive gardens. Their decor reflects the building’s rich historic past as well as the spirit of travel, with plush beds, rattan furniture, black and white patterned headboards, floors of polished wood or stone tile, and whitewashed walls and arched, beamed ceilings, accentuated by pops of sea blue. The modern bathrooms come with curved baths, walk-in showers and pampering organic products.

The rooms look out over the gardens and many have direct garden access. Some suites also have private terraces, as well as kitchens and living rooms, and some are duplex, offering plenty of space on two levels.

Food & drink

Santa Ponsa’s restaurant, Nura, is overseen by a Catalan chef and its delicious menu features contemporary Spanish cuisine which makes the most of fresh, organic produce from the hotel’s vegetable gardens and from across the island. Dine beneath the stone arches of the atmospheric dining room, or out on the sunny terrace, overlooking the gardens, dotted with trees. Try the local lobster speciality, caldereta de langosta.

The chef prepares a cake each day which you can enjoy each afternoon on the terraces or in the living room – perfect for those with a sweet tooth! Two evenings a week, a bar is set up on a 60-metre-high clifftop so you can have a glass of champagne while watching the sun set over the sea.

Take a cooking class to learn the secrets of local dishes, and if you are travelling with the family, the chef has a treat for children too: twice a week, he bakes pastissets, a local biscuit, and children can take part in a workshop and have some fun decorating them, eating what they have made afterwards for tea.

With wellbeing a core focus of the hotel, it is no surprise that the spa is gorgeous: it’s set in the building’s 18th-century cisterns, with a sauna, a hammam and Nordic baths, and there’s also a fitness room and lovely indoor and outdoor pools. The natural, organic products used in the treatments include essential oils extracted from aromatic plants grown in the gardens.

There is a private terrace on the roof of the cisterns, where you can relax in the sunshine.

Activities at Santa Ponsa

From pottery workshops to discovering Menorca on horseback, there is plenty to do and see. Have a picnic in the limestone quarry, including tasty tapas and Fontenille wine, go on a scenic walk to hidden coves, or play golf at the Son Parc golf course – guests can enjoy priority green fees.

Head out on the water on a leisurely boat trip around the coast, or go snorkelling or diving and discover the underwater world of this preserved marine ecosystem.
