Basecamp Hotel

Location: Arctic Norway & Svalbard | Norway

Price guide: £££££ £100-£200 per person per night

In the remote north of the planet, deep within the Arctic Circle, the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard is an adventurer’s paradise, with its barren landscapes where no roads or settlements are found beyond Longyearbyen. Within this dramatic setting is the Basecamp Hotel, a trapper-style lodge made from driftwood, sealskins and objects that hint at the expeditionary past of the island.
Perfect forThe most curious of adventurous travellers, keen to reach the far corners of the world.
In the know
The Basecamp is a great stop for the beginning and end to your Svalbard trip; in-between, stay at the Nordenskiold Lodge which is a snowmobile ride away – it doesn’t get more remote than this.

Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Basecamp Hotel sits in the small capital of Svalbard, Longyearbyen, where a smattering of colourful wooden houses make up the area's biggest community.

Rooms at Basecamp Hotel

The authentic rooms are clad in driftwood, sealskin and slate, with comfortable beds and private bathrooms with hot water for showers, and the views look across the town to the mountains in the distance. There are no TVs in the rooms, but each room has Wi-Fi.

Food & drink

Basecamp Hotel serves breakfast in the Traveller’s Club, but for other meals try one of the nearby restaurants, such as Huset. The Cognac Loft is a cosy lounge with a glass ceiling, so you can have your night cap while gazing up at the Northern Lights in the night sky.

There’s a big-screen television in the lounge, otherwise you can grab a book from the lobby and relax, losing yourself in a tale about Arctic explorers with the Northern Lights illuminating the sky above you.

Activities at Basecamp Hotel

Where to begin? There’s no shortage of thrilling adventures in Svalbard. Go on a boat or snowmobile safari and catch sight of walruses, beluga whales and polar bears in the wild, whizz across the snow on a dog sledding expedition to ice caves and go for a hike on the Nordenskiold Glacier. Learn about the history of Svalbard’s trappers over a traditional trapper dinner, or explore the old coal mines.
