Hotel Overview

Sense of place

In the heart of the medieval hilltop town of Asolo, Albergo al Sole’s pedigree dates back to the 1920s, when it was a favourite haunt of the great Italian actress Eleonora Duse. Restored to its former glory in the 1990s by sisters Silvia and Elena De Checchi, the modern hotel combines a traditional, elegant style with a friendly family atmosphere.

Rooms at Albergo Al Sole

Simple and stylish, the rooms and suites at Albergo al Sole are each unique in their design while all sharing an understated elegance. Many are dedicated to the memory of famous artists or writers connected with the region, such as the Junior Suite 101, which pays tribute to famous poet Gabriele D’Annunzio and features hand-carved, antique wooden furniture. Room 202 has been restored to look exactly the same as when Eleonora Duse lived in it in the 1920s.

Food and drink

La Terrazzo restaurant specialises in blending traditional Italian cuisine with contemporary gastronomic presentation, making the most of sought-after ingredients of the region such as black truffles and exquisite local wines. As the name suggests, the restaurant is located on a beautiful terrace overlooking Asolo and Queen Cornaro’s Castle. Grotta di Bacco, a long-buried nook discovered during the hotel’s restoration in the nineties, is a romantic spot for a private candlelit dinner.

Facilities

Cyclists will find themselves unusually well catered for at Albergo al Sole, with a ‘small luxury bike hotel’ dedicated to mountain bike and Pinarello rental, repairs, and guided tours. Guests can rent mountain bikes for free. There is also 24-hour gym, and wellness treatments are available in the Massaggi treatment room. A free shuttle bus service will take you practically anywhere you wish to go within ten kilometres of the hotel.

Activities at Albergo Al Sole Save

It’s well worth taking up the hotel on their free mountain bike rental for guests and exploring the local area, which is peppered with vineyards, villas and churches. Asolo is known as the ‘city of a hundred horizons’ for its hilltop location and beautiful views, and beautiful buildings include the church of Sant’Anna, the resting place of actress Eleonora Duse and explorer Freya Stark. The surrounding area was once known as the ‘garden of Venice’ for its fertile countryside, and wine tasting in one of the many local vineyards is a great way to spend an afternoon. Cooking lessons in classic Italian cuisine are available at the hotel.

Hotel location

The nearest airport is Venice Marco Polo, which is a little over an hour’s drive away. One way Asolo retains its historical charm is by restricting car access to the town centre on weekends, but Albergo al Sole guests have special privileges; just make sure you register your car with the hotel to make sure you avoid fines.
