Perfect for

Those who want to have their cake and eat it, experiencing the best of Italy in both city and countryside on a flexible self-drive adventure.

In the know

Stopping off for a few days at Orvieto on your way back to Rome from Umbria, which sits above volcanic rock amidst vines, olive and cypress trees, and has a stunningly intricate Gothic cathedral as well as an impressive underground world of caves. The grapes thrive on the volcanic soil, and you should try the famous Classico wine here, which is still aged in stone cellars.

ROME – 3 nights

Start your Italian holiday in Rome, and check in to the Inn at the Spanish Steps, which is at the foot of the Spanish Steps as well as within walking distance to many of Rome’s other landmarks. A former 17th-century stately home, this hotel is listed as a national monument, and is a landmark of its own. Our favourite spot is the rooftop terrace, which has lovely views and is perfect for relaxing after a day’s sightseeing. Enjoy a guided tour of the Vatican or the Colosseum, get under the skin of the city on a walking tour, or learn how to make Italy’s famously delicious gelato – the options are endless! You could also shop in the designer boutiques and the colourful markets and linger over a chilled glass of prosecco and some tapas on a pretty piazza in the sunshine.

PERUGIA – 4 nights

After picking up your car in Rome, enjoy a scenic morning’s drive to Perugia and the exquisite Relais Casamassima, a quintessential rural Italian idyll that’s surrounded by rolling hills of vines and olives. This working farm in Umbria has plenty of character and charm, alongside luxurious interiors and delicious food made with fresh produce grown and produced on the farm, such as its award-winning olive oil. If you can drag yourself away, some of Italy’s most picturesque spots are on the doorstep. Historic Perugia, which showcases elegant palazzi and cobbled streets, as well as a buzzing 21st-century vibe, is just a 10-minute drive, and the beautiful medieval town of Assisi is also nearby, where you can wander amongst pretty houses and piazzas and see churches adorned with 13th-century frescoes. There are plenty of smaller towns to discover here too, such as Gubbio, which has a Roman theatre that puts on performances every summer and a cable car that takes you up to the summit of Mount Ingino for glorious views over the Apennines (and if you’re there over Christmas, you’ll be treated to the spectacular sight of the mountain’s slopes lit up by an illumination of a giant Christmas tree). Just ask Anna for her tips on what to see and do, and on your return, enjoy a swim among the sweet-smelling lavender and relax in a gazebo under the wisteria, plucking a fresh fig or cherry from the trees.
