Hotel Overview

Sense of place

A former medieval fortress and later Renaissance residence of Pope Julius II, grand boutique hotel Relais La Suvera isn’t lacking in history. Surrounded by the rolling hills and vineyards of the Chianti region, this is a classic Tuscan estate complete with stables, a farmhouse, and a church – there’s even a small museum, such is the hotel’s history.

Rooms at Relais La Suvera

Rooms and suites at Relais La Suvera are divided between the main Papal Villa, the farmhouse and the stables. They are elegantly and traditionally furnished with four poster beds and antique furniture and many of those in the farmhouse and stables have private gardens and terraces, with many in the Papal Villa having stunning views over the countryside beyond.

Food and drink

The Oliveira restaurant serves up traditional Tuscan cuisine based on the freshest regional produce, with organic jams and marmalades and seasonal fruit at breakfast, and gourmet dishes made from locally sourced ingredients at dinner. Light lunches and informal dinners are also available at the Bar dei Limoni, in the shade of lemon trees beside the pool, which is also a great place for a post-dinner glass of wine.

Facilities

Spa Balneum, in the Papal Villa, also draws on the hotel’s history, with an ancient water storage area now home to a hydromassage pool. There’s also a gym and Turkish bath, and a range of aromatherapy treatments on offer. The hotel’s outdoor pool, surrounded by cypress and linden trees, is a beautiful place to relax, as are the landscaped gardens.

Activities at Relais La Suvera

Not to be missed during your stay here is the small museum on the first floor of the Papal Villa, which contains portraits, statues and artefacts from the collections of the Ricci and Massimo families who once made their home here. A tour of the nearby Brunello winery is a great way to get acquainted with the renowned produce of the Chianti region, while cooking classes and truffle hunting with an expert is also available.
