Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Castello Banfi is a boutique hotel in the historic hill town of Montalcino, 42 kilometres from Siena, which has historic centre that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to Italian Gothic and medieval architecture and the famous Palio di Siena horse race that takes place biannually.

Rooms at Castello Banfi

The 14 suites are found in village houses located on a steep lane along the beautiful stone hamlet just outside of the castle walls, once used as residence by farmers. The suites have an antique-style feel and have been thoughtfully designed by Tuscan designer Federico Forquet with handmade accessories and high-quality fabrics with floral patterns that highlight the elegance of Castello Banfi while keeping with the traditional townhouse feel. The bathrooms have large tubs and rain showers for ultimate relaxation.

All suites are spacious and feature a king-sized bed but the Riserva and Poggio all’Oro suites are more like lavish apartments, with spacious lounges.

Food & Drink

There are two restaurants to choose from: La Sala dei Grappoli and La Taverna. The former serves Mediterranean and Tuscan food al fresco in summer with shimmering lights from the castle creating a romantic atmosphere, while the latter is a classical Tuscan restaurant under the steep arches of the former barrelled cellars of the castle, which once held the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine in oak casks.

The restaurants use fresh, local ingredients in the delicious cuisine. You are bound to fall in love with Tuscan cuisine so why not enrol on the hotel’s ‘Chef for a day’ cooking class where you can learn to cook like a local from the experts?

Each meal is accompanied by Castello Banfi wines, which are made on site and can be savoured in the wine repository or ‘enoteca’, which once served as a medieval wine cellar.

Facilities

The hotel offers a miniature gym, with training equipment from exercise bikes to dumbbells, or if you fancy something less intensive, you can grab a yoga mat and take it outside to the courtyard or gardens for some light stretching in the open air.

Activities at Castello Banfi

Consider yourself a wine connoisseur? Enjoy a guided winery tour and discover how the local favourite Brunello di Montalcino wine, with its rich taste and fruity aroma, is produced from Sangiovese grapes. The latest addition is a micro-winery, designed to expand the range of Castello Banfi’s grape selection. You can also explore the vineyards and the Tuscan countryside by foot or by bike, and sample some of the region’s fine wines on the terraces that overlook the vineyards.
