Admire the glittering kaleidoscope of Byzantine mosaics in the churches dotted throughout Ravenna, which was the capital of the Western Roman Empire between 402 and 476 A.D. These UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with their jewel-like masterpieces, are allegedly the world’s most impressive collection of Byzantine mosaics: one of the best examples is at the Basilica di San Vitale, just 250 metres from Santa Maria Foris.
