Frost and Fire offers the best of both worlds – it feels like a remote riverside retreat yet isn’t far from Reykjavik. It sits on the River Varma in Hveragerdi, overlooking Mt Reykjafjall.

Rooms at Frost and Fire

Frost and Fire’s rooms take the form of a terrace of cabins overlooking the river and the unspoilt countryside surrounding the guesthouse. The rooms are luxurious but unpretentious, with lovely dark wood floors, artwork depicting leaves, trees and other motifs from nature, and a cool colour scheme of purples, whites and greys.

Food & Drink

In keeping with the hotel’s remote location and relationship with the natural environment, Restaurant Varma is committed to a Slow Food philosophy and the use of fresh seasonal ingredients. Offerings change according to the availability of ingredients, but include tuna tartar, lamb in liquorice, and hot smoked goose breast. At breakfast, you can begin the day with a range of organic and locally sourced goodies such as smoked trout and free range eggs, which you can choose to boil yourself in a hot spring.

Facilities

The guesthouse’s facilities make the most of its stunning location amid the unspoilt volcanic landscapes of Iceland. Alongside an outdoor swimming pool, there are hot tubs heated naturally – perfect for enjoying the Northern Lights on a chilly winter’s night – and traditional wooden Kneipp baths to help you recover after a day in the great outdoors. You can also indulge in a natural geothermal mudbath, and swim in the River Varma, which is kept warm by the area’s volcanic activity.

Activities at Frost and Fire

Unsurprisingly, the great outdoors dominates proceedings here, with a range of activities on offer to help you explore and enjoy the hotel’s beautiful surroundings. These range from the conventional, such as hiking and horse riding, to the less obvious, such as snorkelling in the stunning Silfra rift, where remarkably clear water divides two continental plates. As well as swimming in the River Varma, you can fish for salmon, while rafting is a great way to explore the Hvita River.
