Reykjavik, Iceland

2 NIGHTSREYKJAVIK

Your romantic escape begins in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, a small city which punches above its weight in terms of culture, nightlife, and things to do. You will spend two nights at Sandhotel, a contemporary boutique hotel in central Reykjavik. This stylish, Scandi-chic hotel is the perfect cosy retreat – you can even get cinnamon buns delivered from the Sandholt bakery next door – and its location means you have the best that Reykjavik has to offer right on your doorstep.

Highlights of the capital include the iconic church, Hallgrimskirkja, which towers impressively above the skyline; the National Museum, which tells the story of Iceland’s unique history and culture; and the cutting edge Hafnarhus, a hub for the city’s thriving contemporary arts scene. There’s also no end of romantic experiences to be had here, no matter the time of year. Between April and October, a private boat tour is an unforgettable way to spot whales off the coast, while trips into the countryside to view the Northern Lights are on offer in the winter.

3 NIGHTSGOLDEN CIRCLE

The second leg of your Icelandic adventure takes you inland to the volcanic wilderness of Nesjavellir in Iceland's iconic Golden Circle. The landscapes here promise everything for which the Icelandic countryside is famous: otherworldly lava fields, spouting geysers and waterfalls. There are many ways to explore this beautiful area, from pony rides to kayaking. An unexpected option is the opportunity to scuba dive in the Silfra fissure, a crack between two continental plates, which is narrow enough in places for divers to touch both plates at the same time. These unique geological conditions provide a habitat for brightly-coloured green "troll hair" to grow on the rocks, and crystal-clear visibility in which to view it.

You’ll spend the final three nights of your trip at the ION Adventure Hotel, a modern hotel which, as the name suggests, is well set up for allowing you to experience the natural environment, with a range of tours and activities on offer. Its greatest draw, though, is its remote location, with clear, quiet skies perfect for experiencing the Northern Lights in the winter – the ultimate unforgettable romantic experience. As the perfect end to your journey, you’ll visit the Blue Lagoon, perhaps Iceland’s most famous natural wonder, where you’ll enjoy a dip in geothermal waters, surrounded by lava fields and mountains.
