This historic and characterful hotel, which is carved into volcanic rock and has several levels on the cliifside, dates from the 18th century. It was previously a cluster of merchants' houses, and has been family-run for several generations, guaranteeing exceptional service and exclusivity.

The apartments and suites all come with panoramic vistas of Santorini's iconic sunsets over the Aegean. From studio apartments to the honeymoon suite, some complete with Jacuzzi and all with terraces facing the spectacular caldera, and the VIP suite, which comes with a private plunge pool, there is something for everyone here.

The luxurious and inviting interiors, including comfortable lounges and kitchenettes, come with the traditional Greek splashes of blue and white, you can expect the signature Santorini experience, from antique furnishings to hand-crafted marble bathrooms. There are books, music and iPod and iPhone docks, but no TVs, ensuring you can kick back and relax, island style.

The Altana Cliffside Villas, created from a complex of wine cellars dating back to the 19th century, are just a two-minute walk away, are ideal for couples or families with older children. Ranging from studios and suites to one and two-bedroom villas for up to six people, all have verandas overlooking the caldera and the Aegean, and some even have private dip pools or Jacuzzis perfect for ultimate relaxation and taking in the sunset views. Breakfast can be delivered to your room daily, or you can eat in the restaurant, and you can also indulge in private in-room spa treatments and have custom-made food baskets delivered to your room. Altana's pool and restaurant are a stone's throw away in the main building.

Food & Drink

Start your day with a traditional Greek breakfast, made with organic produce grown on the fertile volcanic soils of the hotel’s own farm. The delicious buffet includes fresh fruit, homemade cakes, Greek yoghurt and cheeses, organic honey, as well as the hotel’s signature sour cherry juice.  

In the evening, sip a cocktail or two in the bar or on the veranda, overlooking the caldera, and tuck into canapés inspired by the Aegean islands – you can also take a cooking class to learn how to recreate local dishes back home. Wine tasting sessions are held in the Kafenion, the historic cave house café/bar, where you can also enjoy gourmet snacks and cocktails. For an extra-special experience, have a private candlelit dinner on your veranda.
