Chateau de Bagnols

Location: Lyon, Burgundy & the Rhone Valley | France

Price guide: £££££ £100-£200 per person per night

Château de Bagnols is perhaps the finest château hotel in France and is regarded by many as the finest vineyard chateau hotel in the world. Discovered by Lady Hamlyn in 1987 in a derelict state, she painstakingly restored the château to its former glory, revealing Renaissance wall tapestries and delicate frescos created during the château's finest period when nearby Lyon was one of Europe's great Renaissance cities. Dating from the 13th century, the chateau is made from local honey-coloured stone known as pierres dorées and features impressive towers, an original dry moat, and a dramatic entrance across a drawbridge.
Perfect forThose who have always yearned to see what it’s like to live in a fairy tale castle.

Hotel Overview

Where

Set amongst vineyards, forests and green hills in the heart of the beautiful Beaujolais countryside in south-east France, approximately 17 miles from Lyon.

Rooms at Château de Bagnols

The 21 rooms and suites at Château de Bagnols are some of the most decadent in France. True to the castle’s heritage, Château Suites are bedecked in the finest décor including fragile antique textiles, regal four-poster beds draped in antique silks and brocade and original hand-painted frescoes. The Chai Suites, on the other hand, are utterly contemporary in style with earthy colour palettes and sleek furnishings.

Food and facilities

Château de Bagnols is home to the acclaimed Michelin star restaurant, 1217, overseen by renowned chef Jean Alexandre Ouaratta. You can expect exceptional, creative cuisine made from fresh, seasonal ingredients and served in a majestic dining room complete with beamed ceilings and a huge, Gothic fireplace; or relish the cuisine along with the views of Beaujolais’ rolling hills from the outdoor terrace. There’s also the delightful Café du Château which is a more informal setting in the interior courtyard.

Activities at Château de Bagnols

Stroll through the lavender-lined gardens, take a dip in the circular swimming pool or spoil yourself with a massage at the spa. Hop on one of the Château’s bicycles to go off exploring the picturesque Beaujolais countryside, visiting food markets and of course wine tasting – there’s a very good Beaujolais wine trail you can follow.
