Luxury Holidays in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is one of Europe’s lesser-known gems, and it has plenty of spots where you can explore without the crowds. This country is a historic and cultural melting pot, and on a luxury holiday in Bulgaria, you’ll be rewarded with colourful cities full of history, character and charm, and spectacular natural scenery. Go from soaring mountains, glacial lakes and lush forests where bears and wolves roam, to pristine beaches and turquoise waters lining stunning coastlines such as the Black Sea.

Bulgaria’s beautiful capital, Sofia, sits on the slopes of Mount Vitosha, between the Danube and the White Sea on one side and between the Black Sea and the Adriatic on the other. Thousands of years old, it is the country’s cultural and economic hub, and showcases centuries of Christian, Islamic and Jewish history, with numerous churches, monasteries and mosques, most notably the Saint Sofia Basilica, which dates from the 6th century and gave the city its name.

Also well worth a visit is Melnik, in the Pirin Mountains near the Bulgaria-Greece border, which is where you’ll find our favourite hotel in Bulgaria, Zornitza Family Estate. A member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux stable, Zornitza is a perfect base from which to explore this fascinating town and beyond, from its unique sandstone pyramids to its acclaimed wineries.

Refuel with Bulgaria’s hearty cuisine – try the banitsa (flaky cheese pastry) and a glass of rakia (fruit brandy).
