Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Overlooking the Moyne River in the heart of Port Fairy, Drift House has beautiful views and is conveniently located for exploring the historic delights of this old fishing village. Friendly owners John and Colleen live on the same block, and imbue the hotel with a sense of warmth and hospitality despite its achingly cool appearance.

Room at Drift House

Drift House has a unique architectural design blending the traditional and the contemporary, which extends into the four self-contained suites. Salvaged timber and local stone lend an organic feel to the rooms, which are spread between the original bluestone building and the modern extension. Suite One is housed on the ground floor of the former, and features exclusive use of the spacious veranda along the front of the property. Suite Two occupies the first floor of the old building and has a wide balcony overlooking Gipps Street and the Moyne River. Suites Three and Four are housed in the modern glass and steel extension and are modern in design while making extensive use of recycled natural materials.

Food and drink

Drift House does not have a restaurant, and the suites feature kitchens for you to self-cater if you choose. In the morning you’ll receive a breakfast hamper full of locally sourced goodies like organic muesli, sheep-milk yoghurt, eggs and bread, and you’ll probably find there’s enough left over for a packed lunch, too. The suites feature a ‘maxi-bar’ stocked with wine, chocolate, and even pastas and sauces so you can whip up an evening meal. There are numerous great dining options in Port Fairy, with the cosy Merrijig Kitchen a local favourite which draws heavily on the produce of local artisans and seasonal, organic ingredients.

The hotel features a small outdoor pool, which is heated by solar power. Bicycles are available for guests to use. Suites include a thoughtful pamphlet provided by John and Colleen which contains their picks of local restaurants, bars and things to do. Drift House is designed as a retreat for adults and is unsuitable for children.

Activities at Drift House

Port Fairy was settled in the early 19th century as a fishing village, and has retained its historic charm – in 2012 it was voted the world’s most liveable community, and it’s a beautiful place to just spend a day walking around. Griffiths Island has a lighthouse, blooming gardens and a protected colony of muttonbirds, and along Fisherman’s Wharf you can watch the town’s bustling fishing industry carry on as it has for almost 200 years. Battery Hill is home to old cannons and a historic fort, now populated by black wallabies, and Mott’s Cottage, a preserved workingman’s house dating from the 1840s, offers a glimpse of what life was like here for the early settlers.
