Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

Southern Ocean Lodge has a beautiful setting on Hanson Bay, on a wild stretch of coastline overlooking the ocean. It adjoins both the Flinders Chase and Cape Bouguer national parks, on Kangaroo Island’s south-west coast.

Rooms at Southern Ocean Lodge

There are 21 spacious, luxurious suites at Southern Ocean Lodge, cantilevered above the ocean and designed to blend seamlessly into the natural environment.

They are light and airy, with sunken lounges, heated floors, oval stone baths and spectacular ocean, beach and wilderness views from floor-to-ceiling windows. The interiors are influenced by the colours of the coast, and feature sandblasted limestone floors, recycled timbers, artworks and bespoke furnishings by local artisans, and fireplaces to cosy up by in the evening. Take in the panoramic views from your terrace or hot tub.

Food & Drink

The beautiful Great Room is the place to be at Southern Ocean Lodge. Peruse the extensive south Australian wine list at the convivial open bar, or dine on the finest local ingredients at the restaurant.

The lodge has a 'produce to plate' philosophy, utilising local, fresh and organic produce. Cuisine is sophisticated, yet simple, in order to emphasise the intensity of the flavours and to showcase the many delicious flavours of south Australia. Enjoy homemade granola and buttermilk pancakes with Kangaroo Island honey for breakfast, and fresh seafood for al fresco lunches. In the evening, linger over sunset drinks followed by a gourmet four-course dinner with dishes including crab salad, grain-fed beef and local cheeses, washed down with a bottle of wine which you can pick yourself from the walk-in cellar.

Facilities

At the secluded and inviting spa, the signature menu features a range of traditional and modern treatments, teamed with Kangaroo Island botanicals, guaranteed to relax and rejuvenate. There's also an infinity-edge plunge pool - or you can swim in the sea at Hanson Bay, a short walk away.

Activities at Southern Ocean Lodge

Watch kangaroos leap over the horizon, or come face to face with a sea lion, a koala or an echidna. The lodge’s guided island tours and excursions allow you to see the island’s wide variety of wildlife in their natural habitat and explore the beauty of your surroundings, including walks along the limestone cliffs, rocky headlands and pristine white sand beaches that you'll have all to yourself - and don't miss the aptly-named Remarkable Rocks, which aren't far away.

Bespoke experiences include epicurean adventures, visits to local artists and off-the-beaten-track wildlife encounters.
