1 nightLUANG SAY CRUISE

From trekking to boating, and from Thailand to Laos - today, you’ll board a luxury riverboat for a cruise along the mighty Mekong River towards Luang Prabang, learning about life on the river and its colourful wildlife along the way, and enjoying delicious buffet lunches onboard, featuring traditional Laotian cuisine.

Day 1
As you make your journey along the Mekong, you’ll stop off at a traditional Laotian village, with its houses on stilts, and watch artisans at work on centuries-old crafts. After tucking into lunch onboard as you take in the scenery, you’ll arrive at Luang Say Lodge before sunset, and dinner will be served on the terrace overlooking the river, made with fresh, organic vegetables grown in the surrounding gardens.

Stay overnight at the lodge, which sits on the riverfront, against a tropical mountain and jungle backdrop. Watch the fiery red sunset over the water from your riverside room, cocktail in hand, and wake up to the sight of the mist-covered mountains.

Day 2
The next day, continue your cruise, taking in the sandy beaches and granite cliffs. Visit the hill tribe village of Baw, where you can discover how Laotian whiskey is made, and have another buffet lunch onboard. Before arriving in Luang Prabang, you’ll also have the chance to see the thousands of Buddha statues in the Tam Ting caves, a popular local pilgrimage spot.

2 nightsLUANG PRABANG

Luang Prabang, the country’s former royal capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-visit while you’re in Laos. See the appropriately regal Royal Palace and the ornate Buddhist temples, and if you’re hankering after another trek, climb the steps up Mount Phousi – at the top you can enjoy panoramic views over Luang Prabang and the mountains beyond. Head to the lovely Kuang Si waterfalls for a perfect photo opportunity and a refreshing swim. This also makes a lovely picnic spot.

You may also like to take part in a baci ceremony, where a village elder will wrap a white cotton thread around your wrist and chant an invocation (in Laos, white is traditionally the colour of peace, good fortune and warmth).

Your hotel, Satri House, is a characterful colonial-style hotel right in the heart of Luang Prabang, making it easy to explore the city and its surroundings.

3 nightsSIEM REAP

It’s on to Cambodia and Siem Reap, which is home to around 500 temples, including the justifiably famous Angkor Wat, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. The biggest religious monument in the world, this temple cannot fail to wow, especially at sunrise and sunset, and around the Angkor Archaeological Park you’ll find numerous other hidden temples and ruins, which have been all but reclaimed by the jungle and swirling trees.

Angkor Wat is of course the main draw in Siem Reap, but the French Quarter is well worth visiting, and it is also known for its arts and culture and its food. Get out on the water again on a boat trip on Tonle Sap Lake, and glide serenely past floating villages and stilted houses.

Your hotel, Shinta Mani, is a boutique haven set in tropical gardens just 15 minutes from Angkor Wat.

3 nightsKOH LANTA

Back in Thailand, you’ll make your way to the sleepy, beautiful island of Koh Lanta, where you’ll find postcard-perfect beaches to relax on and unwind, fantastic snorkelling and diving and blissful peace – this is a small, relatively undeveloped island, where it’s easy to find your own private idyll.

The Pimalai sits on a hillside overlooking the pristine beach and the azure waters of the Andaman Sea. Browse the quirky shops and watch the fishermen bringing in the day’s catch in the Old Town’s historic harbour, or pass the hours on the fine white sand, before enjoying a lantern-lit dinner while you take in the views, and lingering over cocktails at the beach bar, under the stars.
