Price guide: £££££ £200-£350 per person per night

The Slate, set in beautiful tropical gardens not far from the beach, is an eye-catching hotel designed by renowned architect Bill Bensley, and its industrial-chic character is inspired by the tin mining industry that put Phuket on the map. With its distinctive design and signature Bensley touches, alongside exemplary service, you can be sure that this will be more of an experience than a usual hotel stay.
Perfect forAnyone looking for luxury with a twist and a taste of Phuket’s fascinating past.
In the knowThe hotel is run by Wichit Na-Ranong, a descendant of Khaw Sim Bee Ra Na-Ranong, the governor of Phuket, who revolutionised the island’s trade sector with the mining industry. This rich history is entrenched in The Slate and is the basis of architect Bensley’s entire design of the hotel.

Hotel Overview

Sense of place

The Slate is nestled in gardens of palm trees just a short walk from Nai Yang Beach and the Andaman Sea.

Rooms at The Slate

Designed for complete luxury, with touches such as colourful art, rich colours and soaring wooden-beamed ceilings, The Slate offers five different types of stylish and spacious suites and villas. The most impressive are the one and two-bedroom Pool Villas, which come with their own pools, Jacuzzis and saunas, as well as 24-hour private butler service - so you won’t even need to set foot out of your villa.

Each individual suite showcases different aspects of industrial architecture and eye-catching design, such as the charcoal bathtubs in the D-Buk Suites and the handcrafted rugs in the Pearl Bed Suites.

Food & drink

The Tin Mine restaurant offers a tempting international menu from steaks to Indian food, with themed live cooking stations. Black Ginger, which hovers above the lagoon, is popular for its traditional food, expertly created with a contemporary twist using produce from The Slate’s organic gardens. Try Japanese dishes such as sashimi at Rivet, or a private feast can be prepared for you in a setting of your choice.

Sample a variety of rare whiskies and handcrafted cocktails and play a game of snooker in the Tongkah Tin Syndicate bar, or enjoy light snacks and watch a classic film at Dirty Monstera.

Facilities

There are three pools, including an adults-only infinity pool which is perfect for finding some peace and cooling down under the hot Thai sun, a family pool with a waterfall and another with in-pool jets and a swim-up bar. You can also pamper yourself in the spa, where you can indulge in treatments tailored specifically to your needs and relax in style in the spectacular woven Tree Nest nestled in the branches.

Activities at The Slate

To get a true taste of the culture, go on a cooking class to learn how to make traditional Thai dishes using fresh ingredients which you will source yourself from the local market. If you’re after something more adrenaline-fuelled, enjoy water sports from kite-surfing to diving (make for the Similan Islands, a world-class diving spot), or take a Muay Thai boxing class to master Thailand’s national sport.

Around the area, browse the bustling Naka weekend market and visit the 200-year-old Nai Yang temple at sunrise to make food offerings to the monks.
