Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge sits right on the banks of Sabah's longest river, Kinabatangan, surrounded by spectacular nature and wildlife.

Rooms at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge

Reached along wooden walkways, the stilted chalets are rustic and simple but are cosy and very comfortable and full of character, and have private bathrooms with hot showers. They overlook either the river or the rainforest, and who needs air conditioning when a gentle breeze from the river cools down the rooms each evening?

Food & Drink

Sarongs at the ready! This wildlife hotspot provides a variety of fabrics for its guests to wear to dinner - quite the talking point. The food is fresh and simple – often involving the day’s catch from local fishermen – and is eaten in the laid-back central dining area.

The observation tower and the open sundeck are the perfect places to look out for wildlife, such as proboscis monkeys swinging from branch to branch or hornbills perched in the treetops.

Activities at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge

Occupying a prime spot in the Kinabatangan River delta, within the village of Sukau, this area harbours one of Southeast Asia's largest concentrations of wildlife. All activities at the lodge are nature-focused, taking full advantage of the range of wildlife in the surrounding jungle and river. The holy grail for birders is the extraordinary long-necked snakebird (anhinga), which you may be lucky enough to see diving for fish.

Well-marked nature trails lead off in all directions, which you can wander freely or with a guide. Heading along a jungle trail, keep your eyes peeled for proboscis monkeys and long-tailed macaques, whilst on river cruises you’ll weave through the mangroves past colourful birds – and if you’re lucky, the rare pygmy elephant.

Once you've watched a family of pygmy elephants play, and seen endangered monkeys swing through the trees, you'll be especially happy to know that staying here puts your well-earned money straight back into the pockets of the local people and their conservation efforts. Many locals work at the lodge, and even the fresh fish served up in the restaurant is bought for a fair price from village traders.
