Start your Asia odyssey in Myanmar (Burma), which is home to pristine landscapes, rivers and lakes, dotted with temples. Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city and its former capital, is home to some of the most beautiful temples in Myanmar – visit the incredible Shwedagon pagoda, which glitters with around 60 tons of gold. You should also visit the beautiful Karaweik Palace on the shores of Kandawgyi Lake, and there are numerous Hindu temples, mosques, reclining Buddhas and Burma’s only synagogue, as well as museums, green and leafy parks and colourful markets. Continue your journey into the heart of Myanmar in Bagan, which sits on the banks of the Irrawaddy River. There are thousands of temples here, each one with its own personality and architectural style. Watch the sunset from the top of one of the temples, or enjoy it from a hot air balloon over the beautiful landscapes – an unforgettable experience. Your next destination is Singapore, whose rich melting pot of cultures and intoxicating blend of old and new can’t fail to draw you in. It’s on to Indonesia and Borobudur, whose namesake temple presides over the landscape. Dating from the 9^th century, and set against a backdrop of volcanoes, it is the world’s largest Buddhist structure and a majestic sight - it’s well worth the early start to reach the top in time for the stunning sunrise. To see the sun rise over the temple itself, head up Setumbu Hill. Villa Borobudur has a scenic location on the slopes of the Menoreh hills, looking out over the temple and spectacular landscapes of hills, volcanoes, rice paddies and villages. Trek around the verdant hills and rice fields and discover hidden waterfalls, and visit villages to watch local artisans demonstrating crafts such as pottery and batik making.

Your next country is Thailand and its capital, Bangkok, a bustling hub of gleaming skyscrapers, ancient temples, giant Buddhas, designer shopping malls and colourful markets, with characterful spots such as the little lanes of Chinatown well worth exploring. Boats meander along the Chao Phraya River as it winds its way through the city, and further afield, enjoy a day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ayutthaya, the capital of the kingdom of Siam between the 14^th and 18^th centuries. In Ayutthaya Historical Park, you can explore regal and vast palaces, Buddhist temples and monasteries, which still evoke their past splendour. The luxurious Peninsula hotel sits right on the riverfront, and you can enjoy a sightseeing cruise on the hotel’s own beautifully restored rice barge, before returning for an evening drink on the terrace, looking out over the river and the city beyond.

Your final stop is Siem Reap in Cambodia, which is home to yet another famous temple – the ethereal Angkor Wat, which dates from the 12^th century and is the world’s largest temple complex – much of it is still enveloped in dense jungle. Admire its sheer size, reflected in the surrounding moat, and get up close to see the beautiful and intricate carvings of gods, heavenly nymphs and mythological scenes. Visit at sunrise or sunset for more unforgettable views. In the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Angkor Archaeological Park, there are numerous hidden temples and ancient ruins, where you can find a quiet spot away from the camera-clicking crowds. Around Siem Reap, explore the colonial French quarter and the markets, and visit Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in south-east Asia, where you can see floating villages on the water and a wide variety of wildlife around the mangrove forests, including crocodiles, turtles and macaque monkeys.
