Sense of Place
Jing’s Residence is housed in a beautifully renovated mansion, and its central location means many of Pingyao’s attractions are right on the doorstep. Its traditional design, featuring grey-brick pavilions set around four courtyards, with landscaping elements such as water, white stones and traditional brick-paved walkways connecting the courtyards, reflects authentic northern Chinese style and its historic surroundings.
The UNESCO-listed Pingyao, which became one of China’s most prosperous trading and financial hubs over the centuries, has some of the best-preserved architecture in China.
Rooms at Jing's Residence
There are just 19 rooms and suites looking out over the serene courtyards, guaranteeing an exclusive and peaceful stay. Formerly home to Chinese aristocrats and powerful merchants, they are all uniquely furnished: their interiors feature lacquer and silk bedheads, carved wooden window frames, decorative clay panels, bamboo flooring and rice paper ceilings, alongside elegant bathrooms with antique Chinese wash-basin stands.
The spacious Master Suite has a private sitting area and a luxurious handmade bath to relax in after an adventurous day exploring the ancient alleyways of Pingyao.
Food & Drink
Visit the dining room, where you can enjoy freshly-prepared local and international dishes, and sample Shanxi’s unique cuisine, which will be especially enjoyable for noodle lovers - the province has about 260 varieties of noodles and 30 different methods of preparing them, including cutting, pulling, pushing and folding, just to mention a few, combined with delicious sauces that can include minced meat, tomato sauce and scrambled egg.
Tuck into a traditional Chinese hotpot or fondue in the courtyard, cooked in a copper pot with hot coals and paired with vegetables, meat or seafood (and noodles of course). Couples, meanwhile, can experience a romantic candlelit dinner, featuring a menu and matching wines created especially for you.
Have a relaxing experience at the spa, looking out over the rooftops, where you will be pampered with various face and body treatments using only the finest ingredients from Indonesia and Thailand, such as an indulgent herbal foot massage.
There are tables and chairs outside each pavilion, where you can while away an afternoon with a cup of tea and a book, and take in the hotel’s historic charm. For a cosy escape in the evenings, go to the library or have a drink (or two) at the bar.
Activities at Jing's Residence
A variety of activities give you the chance to learn traditional local skills during your stay, including paper cutting, shoemaking and noodle-making classes. Enjoy a private tour of Pingyao with a professor from the local university, and visit the numerous shops for local handicrafts and traditional Chinese clothes.
