Kalaw Hill Lodge

Location: Rural Burma (Myanmar) | Burma

Price guide: £££££ Less than £100 per person per night

Nestled in 30 acres of land against the Shan Hills, Kalaw Hill Lodge's villas were inspired by the architecture of mud houses, which suit its natural surroundings without compromising on comfort and style. The lodge is far removed from the hustle and bustle of the markets, where villagers gather to sell their produce. Visit the local farm where you can learn about old farming techniques that are still in use, and be in close proximity to wildlife such as elephants and tropical birds. Kalaw is also a hiking mecca: with its tea plantations, rice paddies and scenic lakes, this beautiful hill town in the Shan State of Burma is perfect to explore by foot, with its verdant landscapes and high-altitude location with mild temperatures.
Perfect forHikers in search of green landscapes, nature and wildlife.

Rooms at Kalaw Hill Lodge

The traditional rooms showcase authentic Burmese furnishings: including wooden, colonial-style furniture, weaved wall hangings, ceramic pots and a cosy wood-burning fireplace. There is also a floral theme in the décor that ties in with the lodge’s natural surroundings and the delicacy and grace of Burmese culture. All rooms are a spacious 35 square metres, and the ground-floor rooms come with their own balcony or terrace.

Sip a cocktail by the pool or head to the pastry shop to indulge in some freshly-made local delicacies.

Facilities

Unwind in the pool or the bar and lounge after a long day of trekking and exploring the local villages, and indulge in the Panchakarma Wellness Spa, where you can enjoy a range of natural Ayurvedic treatments including aromatherapy and steaming. The lodge's meditation and yoga retreats have an added wow factor as they are held in cosy rooms with glass doors and windows, overlooking the lush green landscape and mountains.

Activities at Kalaw Hill Lodge

Visit the Green Hill Valley Elephant Camp where you can feed and wash retired elephants and plant a teak tree, or discover the magic of the Pindaya Caves – the beautiful Burmese pilgrimage site by the postcard-perfect Inle Lake – which is home to thousands of gilded Buddhas. Be sure to do the Sin Taung Community Trail by a train which runs along the old colonial railway, where you can interact with locals and learn about Burmese culture and cuisine. Head to the viewpoint afterwards, passing along the outskirts of beautiful forests and an old dam, accompanied by an expert guide.
