Hotel Overview

Matemwe, North-East Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanzania

Rooms at Matemwe Bungalows

Matemwe Bungalows has seventeen thatched seafront bungalows built from whitewashed coral in the traditional building style of Zanzibar. Backed by lush tropical gardens, each ensuite room has a private verandah and hammock. The six retreat suites are airy, spacious and beautifully decorated.

Food and Facilities

The open-walled restaurant offers sea breezes and stunning views alongside a menu of Zanzibari and European dishes rich with the tastes of local spices, coconuts, fruits and seafood. There’s also a funky, relaxing beach bar built around the hull of a local wooden fishing boat.

Activities at Matemwe Bungalows

Take to the sea with a local fisherman in a dhow (sailing boat) or ngalawa (outrigger canoe). Guests can borrow snorkels and kayaks from the hotels’ collection, and scuba diving is available by arrangement with a nearby dive centre. Bikes are available to ride around the local villages, and excursions to the spice plantations or historic Stone Town can also be arranged.
