With one of the most varied collections of eco-systems in Africa, ‘when to go’ in Tanzania depends on the type of wildlife that interests you most.
Our favourite months for wildlife spectacles are June to October, with the Great Migration making its way across the Serengeti. The drier months of September/October are also fantastic for game viewing in the Selous and Ruaha; huge herds of elephants in Tarangire, and purple-blooming Jacaranda trees. June to October is also the perfect time to head to the coast, such as the beaches of Zanzibar. Finally for chimp trekkers, the later in the year you travel the closer chimps will be to camp as they come down the hills seeking water.
Any times to avoid? April – May isn’t the best time as there are heavy rains throughout the country, but if you don’t mind brief afternoon storms, and want to get extra attention on your safari, the quieter period in November is definitely worth considering.
