Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

The ‘endless plains’ which give the Serengeti its name are very much in evidence here, stretching off into the horizon, but the landscapes immediately surrounding the hotel are surprisingly varied. The rolling hills are peppered with acacia trees and dotted with vast boulders, as though they were picked up and randomly dumped there by giants in times gone by.

Rooms at Serengeti Bushtops

Bushtops’ 12 tented suites really take ‘glamping’ to the next level. Sitting on raised stilts, they have wraparound wooden verandas, with a dining table and chairs so you can have dinner or drinks with a truly spectacular view; there’s even a private outdoor hot tub.

Inside, wooden floors are adorned with woven rugs, traditional tribal textiles hang on the walls, and the Old World safari feel is completed with a wooden writing desk, lit by vintage lanterns. The centrepiece is the huge, wood-carved four-poster bed, while the en-suite bathrooms, complete with high-pressure shower, are fed by hot water thanks to a solar generator, which also provides electricity to your suite.

Food & Drink

Being deep in the African bush doesn’t mean anything is spared when it comes to the cuisine at Bushtops, which wouldn’t be out of place in any top-class city hotel. Rich seafood curries, grilled beef fillet, handmade cannelloni with leeks and sundried tomato, and pan-roasted lobster are among the mains on offer; finish up with a rich dessert or a board of Tanzania cheeses, with everything artfully presented in a gourmet style.

A sunrise champagne breakfast in the bush is an unforgettable way to start the day, and all meals can also be enjoyed by lantern light out in the grounds, or on your own veranda.

Facilities

After an exhilarating day spotting animals in the bush, wind down in the camp’s treatment area, with a range of wellness therapies on offer which use organic African ingredients. Aromatherapy treatments use herbs and spices from the South African fynbos and the wilds of Madagascar, while deep tissue massages use natural oils from the baobab tree to leave you feeling extremely relaxed.

Of course, you may prefer to stay in your own suite, soaking in your private hot tub with a glass of wine and spotting animals out on the plains.

Activities at Serengeti Bushtops

Game drives in the Serengeti are top of the agenda here, with lions, elephants, wildebeest and zebra among the charismatic creatures which you can spot on morning, full-day and sundowner drives. Walking safaris will also see you get close to herds of zebras, impalas and giraffes, under the watchful eye of your expert guide, a local Kuria tribesman who will dazzle you with tales of the bush and the flora and fauna that live there.

You can even learn some bushcraft skills yourself, like starting a fire without matches or a lighter and identifying animal tracks. Visiting and helping out at a local school is a fun way to meet the locals and do some good during your stay, while soaring above the plains in a hot air balloon is the ultimate way to experience the Serengeti in style.
