Fugitives Drift

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, around four hours’ drive from Durban.

The main lodge’s spacious en-suite cottages each have a private verandah affording views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge. The two-room Cottage at Fugitives Drift is perfect for families or groups of friends. The rooms are decorated in cosy, colonial style and have en suite bathrooms. More rustic, but still very charming self-catering accommodation is available in a stone farmhouse at the top of the estate - perfect for larger groups.

Four-course dinners are served at two large communal tables in a dining room filled with Zulu memorabilia. The new Harford Library is an elegant space with breathtaking views and a superb collection of historical information and is the perfect place for relaxing with a book. Both the lodge and guesthouse have a swimming pool.

Tours of the surrounding area concentrate on thrilling tales of the battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu wars, which are brought to life by talented and knowledgeable guides. After the intense and exciting experience of the battlefield tours, horse riding, cycling and strolling around the reserve, with its collection of zebra, giraffe and antelope, is a nice way to unwind.
