It’s rare for us to recommend a large hotel in a city with so many stylish boutique options, but one visit to Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, and we were smitten. Built in 1899, the Nellie is a South African icon - a grand old lady reigning elegantly and serenely over Cape Town.

Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, painted a distinctive pastel pink, sits at the foot of Table Mountain in Cape Town, nestled in nine acres of lush, beautiful gardens, with sweeping mountain views. The V&A Waterfront is a 40-minute walk away.

Rooms at Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel

The plush and stylish rooms are spread across several wings, and we’d never pretend this grand hotel was small, but it does mean that there’s something for everyone. For a discreet hideaway we’d recommend the historic Garden Cottages, which have private rose gardens, while the main hotel is ideal for history lovers.

The style is a colonial one, combined with 21st-century luxury - think four-poster beds, antique furniture, Venetian mirrors, cosy fireplaces, marble bathrooms and corridors designed for two ladies in full ball dresses to pass comfortably.

Food & Drink

Go from gourmet picnics in the gardens and poolside snacks at the Oasis Bistro to an exquisite fine dining experience in the elegant Lord Nelson restaurant. Indulging in the hotel's legendary afternoon teas is a must: the tempting trays heaving with neatly-cut sandwiches and a delicious array of cakes are not to be missed! Enjoy sundowners or pre-dinner champagne on the Planet Bar's terrace.

There's a blissful spa with spacious treatment rooms, a Finnish sauna, and a conservatory where you can sip soothing herbal teas. The gorgeous pools are perfect for swimming in or relaxing by, or enjoy some yoga in the gardens. For active types, there's a fitness centre and tennis courts.

Activities at Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel

From sunset nature walks to tours of historic Cape Town and winery visits in a classic car, the hotel offers plenty of exceptional adventures to make your stay extra-special. Our top tip? Take advantage of the hotel's location and explore Cape Town on foot - the perfect way to get a feel for one of the world’s most charming cities.

Climbing Table Mountain, taking a helicopter over the city and dining in world-class restaurants are just some of the many other delights on offer.
