Hotel Overview

sense of place

The Fish River Lodge has a spectacular setting on the edge of the 2nd-largest canyon in the world, the Fish River Canyon. Sandwiched in between the Namib and Kalahari deserts, this is one of the least densely populated parts of Namibia, with unspoilt farmland as far as the eye can see.

rooms at fish river lodge

The aesthetic at Fish River Lodge is stylish and contemporary, with the grey colour palette giving it an edgy, industrial feel and the extensive use of stone and wood reflecting the stark natural beauty of its surroundings. You’ll stay in one of 20 private chalets, which dot the edge of the canyon and have stunning panoramic views, facing the sunrise each morning. Rooms have outdoor decks from which to take in the view, and outdoor showers to add to the feeling of immersion in nature.

food & drink

Despite the lodge’s remote location, food at Fish River focuses on making the most of the region’s natural bounty, with a particular emphasis on the beef and game dishes for which Namibia is famous. Breakfast spreads offer a choice of hot English and cold Continental dishes, and lunches are light, healthy affairs like quiches and salads. Dinner is the main event, a sumptuous multi-course event served in the atmospheric dining hall, lit by candlelight. Food is accompanied by an extensive selection of fine South African wines.

The main lodge is home to a rim pool with a spacious wooden deck, which is a great place to cool off and relax after exploring the canyon. There’s also a resident masseuse on hand to soothe your aching muscles after a canyon hike. Fish River Lodge is committed to the safety of its guests, so when you’re hiking you’ll only be led by expert and experienced guides. A backup team will transport the heavier gear to overnight spots so that you only need carry a light pack.

activities at fish river lodge

Fish River Lodge offers a range of activities in the canyon, ranging from short excursions to 5-day hikes. A sundowner drive will take you to scenic viewing points along the canyon rim, while a longer day drive will take you deep into the ravine and see you learn about the area’s unique geological features and wildlife, which includes oryx, klipspringer and mountain zebra. Day canyon hikes are also available, either one way (15km) or return (30km), which require a high level of fitness. The ultimate adventure is the 5-day canyon hike, which will see you explore the landscape up close and overnight at camping spots en route.
