The glitz and glamour of safari is irresistible, but Africa’s about so much more than just wildlife. Tongole, opened in April 2011, aims to show visitors another side to the wilderness. A truly Malawian lodge, built from the rocks and earth on which it stands, this is an insight into another Africa. Hiking, fishing and sleeping out under the stars- the sweet, slow, gentle way of life in rural Malawi is seductive.
Perfect forFishermen, hikers and outdoorsy types.
In the knowMake sure to try some fishing while you’re here. The Bua River is famous for hosting the spawning run of the mpasa (lake salmon).

Rooms at Tongole

Tongole is made up of four huge brick and thatch cottages on the banks of the Bua River. All have decks to perch on with a book and watch the world go by. Tongole’s part of a new generation of lodges, embracing the local environment and style of building. Think deep ochre walls, locally hewn rock, and beautiful views out over the river and forest.

Food is delicious and indulgent- this is no place for weight watchers!  If you make new friends in the lodge meals can be eaten communally, or on various little decks scattered around the lodge.

Activities at Tongole

There’s some game around, but a stay at Tongole is really more about exploring the wilderness and understanding the bush in a way that’s not possible from a safari vehicle. Listen for the sights, sounds and smells of the bush as you explore on foot and by boat. Spend a gentle afternoon wandering through the bush and end your day’s hike with a night under the stars. Finally, visit one of the nearby villages to gain a true understanding of unspoilt rural life.
