2 nightsNXAI PAN

Fly overnight to Johannesburg, on to Maun, and then board a light aircraft flight to Nxai Pan Camp. As you glide over this vast fossil pan, you’ll be bowled over by the parched and cracked expanses of what was once the Makgadikgadi Lake, and when you arrive at Nxai Pan Camp you’ll be greeted by a glorious sense of isolation. Wake up to dazzling sunrises on the pan, and often a smattering of game in the water hole that sits in front of camp, before heading out in the early morning for a game drive. You’ll also visit the famous ‘Baines Baobabs’ trees which were painted by Thomas Baines in 1861 and look almost identical today as they cast their extraordinary ‘bloated’ shadows over the pans. Back at camp you can look forward to an evening of stargazing, and just sitting around the fire to appreciate the blissful silence.

3 nightsOKAVANGO DELTA

Now for a total contrast as you take a light aircraft flight from the arid Nxai Pan, deep into the heart of the Okavango Delta. Staying three nights at Kwara, you’ll feel really immersed in this watery world, as it’s perched on an island in front of a wildlife-teeming water hole, and has both seasonal floodplains and papyrus waterways to explore. It’s also right beside the Moremi Game Reserve, which is big game central. Guided through the delta in a traditional mokoro canoe, you’ll see tiny red reed frogs sitting on the lily pads, along with bull frogs and warblers hiding amongst the rushes. Crocs and hippo, meanwhile, can be spotted on a double-decker boat-trip, and from your breezy perch you’ll also see lechwe leaping through the waters, and an amazing variety of birdlife.

3 nightsKWANDO CONCESSION

Fly north to the Kwando concession, to witness this predator-playground and enjoy a classic safari on its grassy open plains. Here we’ve chosen Kwando Lebala, which sits opposite marshes in the Linyanti River headland and gives you un-interrupted views thanks to its mosquito-net walls. After an al fresco shower on your private veranda, you’ll head out in a 4X4 to see elephant, buffalo – large volumes of predators for which the region is known – and hopefully some wild dog as well. Enjoy a final adrenaline-packed night drive, before flying back to Maun the following day, and on to Johannesburg where you’ll catch your return flight home.
