New Zealand is simply stunning, and ticks all the boxes- gourmet food and wine, incredible hotels, beautiful scenery from glaciers to beaches, and amazing experiences from helihiking to island hopping - this is the place to make the most of the great outdoors. It’s hard to narrow it down, but we’ve managed to pick just some of our favourite Kiwi experiences.
The green countryside around Wanaka is a top spot for one of New Zealand’s most popular activities, but many people head to the adventure capital of Queenstown, where the mighty lakes and snow-capped (and aptly-named) peaks of the Remarkables mountain range make for some amazing views.
While you’re in Queenstown, you can go whitewater rafting down the Shotover river (just like William and Kate did), or take a more leisurely cruise on the impossibly beautiful Milford Sound, where waterfalls cascade down mountainsides and sea lions sun themselves on the jagged rocks that lead out to sea. To get there it’s a pretty hair-raising scenic route around the mountains, but as with everything else in New Zealand, it’s well worth it.
Head to the South Island and the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, where you can enjoy a hike with a difference. Not content with merely trekking round hills and rivers (although of course, in New Zealand, this is an amazing experience too), here you can catch a helicopter to the top of the glacier, strap on some crampons and hike on pristine ice, dotted with sculptured natural crevasses and aquamarine pools, beneath crystal clear skies.
If you head up north from Auckland, you’ll arrive at the Bay of Islands, where you’ll find postcard perfect beaches that stretch for miles. Take a cruise to explore the coastline and the many islands, and visit the quintessentially Kiwi town of Paihia, known as the jewel of the Bay of Islands.
Mythical Rotorua is home to bubbling mud pools, natural hot springs and spouting geysers that look like a film set- it’s no surprise that New Zealand is an increasingly popular film location, including the recent Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. There are scenic walking trails for making the most of these natural phenomena, and afterwards, catch a traditional Maori demonstration and try out the haka- the ritual dance made famous by the legendary All Blacks rugby team.
