2 nightsLIMA

Fly into Lima for the first leg of your journey. After a night’s rest at the hip Hotel B, explore the surrounding Barranco district, with its buzzing café and arts scene and distinctive architecture from ornate mansions to the Puente de los Suspiros (Bridge of the Sighs). This wooden bridge spans a walkway that runs down to the Pacific Ocean, and legend has it that if you make a wish on the bridge, by the time you’ve crossed to the other side you’ll have your wish fulfilled (!).

You’ll also get to see colonial Lima, including the main square, the impressive cathedral, the government palace and the charming maze of cobbled streets.

2 nightsSACRED VALLEY

Your next stop is the beautiful Sacred Valley, whose mountain peaks sweep down to green forests, winding rivers and glassy lagoons. See ancient Inca sites such as Ollantaytambo, a fine example of Incan town planning. Stay at Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado, which sits beside the Urubamba River, where you can enjoy vistas over the river and the valley from your rooms, which combines traditional touches with contemporary charm.

Go hiking, biking, horse riding, rock climbing or river rafting, and on your return, indulge in the spa and feed the alpacas before feasting yourself on Peruvian and international dishes on the terrace, created with fruits and vegetables from the hotel’s own organic gardens: you can also take classes to learn how to make ceviche and Pisco.

1 nightMACHU PICCHU

Sit back and admire the stunning views on the Vistadome train as it journeys through mountains, valleys and local villages before arriving at Aguas Calientes, a small mountain town at the foot of Machu Picchu. Enjoy a private tour of the citadel before relaxing by the fire in your charming casita at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and lush green cloud forests, the hotel is just a half-hour walk from Machu Picchu.

2 nightsCUSCO

Your next stop is Cusco, and Inkaterra La Casona, which gives you the chance to stay in a former conquistador’s mansion on Plaza de las Nazarenas in the centre of the city, which, unsurprisingly, is full of history and character, with interiors of colonial furnishings and antique frescoes and suites set around an inner courtyard.

Cusco itself is also packed full of historic Inca and Spanish monuments, including the main square, Huacaypata (Warrior’s Square) and numerous churches and temples, including Koricancha (Temple of the Sun), whose walls were allegedly plated in sheets of gold.

The ruins surrounding Cusco are just as fascinating, from the imposing Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman to the Inca baths of Tambomachay and the terraces and turrets of Puca Pucara.
