Salvador da Bahia is an attractive UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of Portuguese colonial architecture, Baroque gilded churches, colourful houses and cobblestoned streets leading to pretty squares. It also has a vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture, a thriving arts scene (have a go at capoeira) and a tropical coastline studded with beautiful beaches. Villa Bahia is a stylish boutique hotel in the heart of the city, with one of the city’s best restaurants and a rooftop terrace looking out over historic Pelourinho.

5 nightsMARAU

Head south along the coast to the pristine white-sand beaches, multicoloured coral reefs and tropical rainforest of the Marau Peninsula. The Butterfly House Bahia is a remote, luxurious bolthole where you can find blissful seclusion in idyllic surroundings. Head out on a nature trail from the lodge to see armadillos, marmosets and anteaters. Out on the water, snorkel and dive around the coral reefs and spot whales, manta rays and turtles.
