Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

The street on which L’Auberge sits is classic Carmel: quiet and leafy, flanked on both sides by towering cypress trees. A ten-minute walk takes you to beautiful Carmel Beach, where more ancient cypresses dot an arc of golden sand.

Rooms at L'Auberge Carmel

Each of the hotel’s guestrooms are individually designed, but all share an Old World, European aesthetic which reflects the world travels of hotel founder Allen Knight. Many have wooden open-canopy four-poster beds with  either plush carpets or hardwood floors. Antique armchairs, lit by vintage lamps, are perfect for curling up with a good book, while rooms overlook either the hotel’s courtyard or the Pacific Ocean. Despite their traditional aesthetic, rooms come equipped with modern amenities like wi-fi, flat-screen TV and iPod docks.

Food & Drink

The jewel in the hotel’s crown is its restaurant, Aubergine, which makes the most of the rich bounty of California’s coast and countryside to deliver fantastic cuisine with a Japanese twist. Sample dishes include salmon with shiro dashi fish sauce and peas, abalone with cabbage and miso, and Morro Bay caviar. Food is paired with the finest wine from across California. Breakfast is a more conventional, but no less delicious, affair, with a classic spread of croissants, fresh fruits, cereals and cooked dishes made to order.

Facilities

While there’s no designated spa area at L’Auberge Carmel, a range of spa treatments are available to be enjoyed in the privacy of your room. These include a number of signature therapies unique to the hotel – California Dreaming is a combination of massage techniques from across the world, while Shoppers R&R is a leg- and foot-focused treatment perfect for soothing those tired muscles after a day indulging in some retail therapy.

Activities at L'Auberge Carmel

Carmel, with its relaxed atmosphere, art galleries and boho boutiques, is the kind of place you can happily spend days aimlessly wandering around. Modelled after an English country village, Carmel has been home to countless writers and artists over the decades, including Jack London and Clint Eastwood, who once served as mayor. To get a feel for the city’s history, head to the Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, a Franciscan mission dating from the 1700s. Next, admire the work of local artists at the town’s many art galleries, before spotting sea lions as the sun goes down at the picturesque Point Lobos.
