Lolling in a crescent-shaped bay on the Pacific Coast, San Juan del Sur gives you a real but charming glimpse of Nicaraguan life. Colourful buildings dot the waterfront, people sit in rocking chairs on their verandas, children play football along the shore, and some of Central America’s best beaches are within easy reach.
It’s also interesting historically, as the San Juan River, which joins the lake to the coast, was once used by Spanish conquistadors to transport Inca gold to the Caribbean.
