Mi Amor is a stylish boutique hotel on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, near the ancient ruins of Tulum. Inspired by the films of Mauricio Garces and the ‘Golden Age of Mexican Cinema’, the hotel has a feel of vintage glamour designed to evoke 1950s Acapulco. With the jungle on one side, and the Caribbean Sea on the other, this hotel feels in its own world but is well-placed for exploring famous attractions such as the ruins of Tulum, which lie nearby.

Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Built into a rocky, palm-studded outcrop overlooking the ocean, Mi Amor has a pretty picturesque location. Many of the rooms overlook the ocean; those that do not have similarly picturesque views over the jungle or the hotel garden.

Rooms at Mi Amor

Mi Amor’s rooms have a stylish, mid-century feel, with retro light fittings and wood-and-tile walls. They all open out onto private balconies or verandas, with views over either the ocean, the jungle or the hotel gardens. Some feature their own private plunge pools, while seafront rooms feature jet tubs. All rooms are decorated with Mexican textiles and locally handcrafted furniture.

Food & Drink

Mi Amor’s restaurant specialises in French-Italian fusion cuisine courtesy of chef Paul Bentley, with examples of dishes including beet ravioli, crispy suckling pig and lamb birria. As you’d expect from the hotel’s location, fresh seafood features prominently on the menu. Food is accompanied by an extensive drinks menu, including a range of artisanal cocktails courtesy of the resident mixologist.

Facilities

Mi Amor’s Colibri Spa offers a range of rejuvenating wellness treatments, such as hot stone and Swedish massages, reflexology and facials. The spa’s signature treatments are its ‘Four Elements’ series, based on the properties of air, fire, earth and water; in keeping with the hotel’s romantic theme, a range of couples treatments are also available.

Activities at Mi Amor

The hotel is perfectly placed for exploring the many ancient ruins in the surrounding area; these include those of Tulum, the region’s most famous attraction, just a few minutes’ bike ride away. Further inland are the ruins of Coba, unusual among Mexican pyramids in still being surrounded by thick jungle; a couple of hours further afield – but worth the journey – lies Mexico’s most famous cultural attraction, Chichen Itza. Another unmissable experience is a swim, snorkel or scuba dive in the cenotes, this area’s unique underground system of rivers and caves – it’s not difficult to see why the Mayans thought of them as portals to the underworld.
