Taylors Hill

Location: Sri Lanka's Hill Country | Sri Lanka

Taylors Hill combines historic charm with contemporary flair, and is perfect for discovering the legacy of tea in Sri Lanka: it sits on a working estate that is home to the country’s first and longest-serving tea factory. Built by a British planter over a century ago, the hotel is named after James Taylor, who introduced commercial tea production to Sri Lanka on the neighbouring Loolecondera estate.

Despite its secluded location, you can also explore Kandy and its surrounds from here, including attractions such as the Temple of the Tooth.
Perfect forBoth couples/honeymooners and families looking to discover Sri Lanka’s tea culture in a beautiful, tranquil setting.

Hotel Overview

Sense of Place

Taylors Hill is on the Pattiyagama Estate in the mountains of Kandy, surrounded by manicured lawns, gardens and hills.

Rooms at Taylors Hill

There are just a handful of rooms here, ensuring space and privacy. They are named after pioneers of tea in Sri Lanka, and are individually styled, light and colourful, blending antique furnishings with contemporary features, including quirky touches. They have four-poster beds (one has its four corners in the striking shape of trees), custom-made wallpaper designs and comfortable armchairs by the fireplace. Some rooms have interconnecting children’s rooms, making them ideal for families.

Large windows look out over the gardens and the hills surrounding Nuwara Eliya, as well as the resident wildlife – wake up to birds singing and monkeys climbing the trees.

Food & Drink

Have breakfast outside, overlooking the hills, where you can choose from an unsurprisingly wide range of teas. In the candlelit restaurant, dine on fresh Asian fusion cuisine, inspired by the culture and history of the region and traditional Sri Lankan dishes – as well as British favourites.

Speaking of all things British, don’t miss the afternoon tea, which includes a tempting range of freshly-baked cakes as well as a cup of freshly-brewed tea.

Facilities

There is an infinity pool in the pretty gardens, as well as a tennis court, badminton, a snooker room and croquet on the lawn. Inside, there are elegant lounges to relax in and a play room for children.

Activities at Taylors Hill

See where James Taylor lived on the Loolecondera estate, and visit Field No. 7, where tea was first cultivated on the estate – the original tea bush is still producing tea today. Learn more about tea growing in the area at the fascinating Ceylon Tea Museum.

There are walking and biking trails around the hotel (borrow one of their bikes to explore), and you can also enjoy nature and birdwatching trips with expert guides, and visit the brightly painted Hindu kovils (temples) dotted around the area.

In and around Kandy, see the revered Temple of the Tooth and wander around the beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya. At Nuwara Eliya, you’ll find waterfalls, lakes, gardens and the highest mountain in the country, Pidurutalagala.
