Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Perched on a hilltop yet within easy access of the heart of Galle, The Dutch House’s location offers the best of both worlds. Tropical gardens surround the hotel, which is set in a bungalow dating from 1712. Despite the sense of history, though, the atmosphere and service are unpretentious and relaxed.

Rooms at Dutch House

The Dutch House’s 4 luxurious suites reflect the hotel’s history while keeping modern standards of comfort and luxury. The atmosphere is elegant and colonial, with dark wood furnishings including ornate four-poster beds, and beautiful one-off antiques decorating the rooms. The Ball Room is the grandest, opening on to a veranda and courtyard – rock star Sting once stayed here.

Food and drink

Breakfast is a flexible affair, with a range of international and Sri Lankan dishes served at a time of your liking. Whether you’d rather start the day with a hearty full English or breakfast as the locals do on hoppers – Sri Lankan coconut pancakes served with chutneys and curries – you can enjoy it whenever and wherever you choose, whether that’s in the gardens, by the pool or in the privacy of your room. Light lunches and snacks can also be arranged, while for dinner head next door to The Sun House – a gourmet speciality seafood restaurant renowned as the home of some of the best cuisine in Sri Lanka.

Facilities

The Dutch House is home to a beautiful infinity pool, which sits at the end of the garden and overlooks the city of Galle below you and the jungle covering the surrounding hillsides. In true colonial style, the hotel has a croquet lawn, and there’s also a library where evening cocktails are served before dinner time. Massage treatments can be arranged on request. Children above the age of 14 are welcome at the hotel, but it is not suitable for families with younger children.

Activities at Dutch House

The hotel’s colonial Dutch style reflects that of the fascinating city of Galle, which lies within easy reach down the hill. The historic old town, Galle Fort, contains numerous historical buildings such as the Dutch Reformed Church and Amangalla, the former governor’s house. Stunning sunsets are visible from Flag Rock at the southernmost point of Galle Fort. Galle is a cosmopolitan city with a large population of foreign artists, writers and other creative types – you’ll find boutiques and galleries at every turn.
