Hotel Overview

Sense of place

Surrounded by the rugged peaks of the mightiest mountain range in the world, the Himalayas, it goes without saying that you’re in for some pretty spectacular views. You also might be surprised by the richness and diversity of the wildlife, which includes animals and plants found nowhere else on earth.

Rooms at Shakti Sikkim Village Walk

During the course of the trek, you will stay at three separate houses in different villages: Sandyang Lee, Hee, and Radhu Khandu. The houses are traditionally Sikkimese, built from rich dark wood and slate, and the bathrooms have been renovated to a Western style to cater for international travellers. Showers use a bucket system, but both hot and cold water are available. The views from the rooms are arguably the biggest draw, with Sikkim famed for its views of the Himalayas and Kanchenjunga – the third-highest mountain in the world – in particular.

Food and drink

In the village houses, your hosts will serve you delicious Sikkimese cuisine, which has more in common with those of Tibet and Nepal than with the rest of India: expect steamed momo dumplings, hearty stews, and lots of dhal and rice. All meals and alcoholic drinks are inclusive in the rate, and you’ll probably be offered tongba – a millet-based brew which is given to guests as a sign of respect and hospitality. Hearty packed lunches are provided to ensure you keep your energy up for the walks between the villages.

Facilities

As comfortable as the village houses are, remember you’re trekking in the Himalayas – don’t expect spas or swimming pools or you’ll be disappointed. Kids aged 5 and above are welcomed on the trek, with under-12s half price and extra beds available; however, be aware that younger children may find the physical aspect of the walk challenging.

Activities at Shakti Sikkim Village Walk

This trek is all about enjoying the incredible views of the Himalayas and getting to know more about the rich wildlife and fascinating Buddhist culture of Sikkim. Kanchenjunga, the mightiest of the peaks you can spot here, is the third-highest mountain in the world and has cultural and religious significance to people here. Sikkim is one of the few Buddhist enclaves in India, as is evident in the prayer wheels and flags which line your route, and you can explore the ancient monasteries and temples around which local life revolves. Despite the remote alpine location, there’s also a remarkably rich array of wildlife, from the ubiquitous yaks to elusive snow leopard, birdlife found nowhere else on earth, and a huge variety of plants including orchids and rhododendrons.
