2 nightsDELHI

Your adventure begins in Delhi, India’s capital and the gateway to the country’s remote north. It’s a great place to start, and not just for its great transport connections: by turns beautiful, bewildering and mysterious, Delhi is the essence of India. Staying at the stylish Lodhi Hotel in the heart of the city, you’ll be perfectly located for exploring Delhi’s historical and cultural attractions. A stone’s throw from where you’re staying is Humayun’s Tomb, the mausoleum of the 16th-century emperor, which is a brilliantly preserved example of Mughal architecture. Other sites of interest include the Jama Masjid, one of India’s largest and most important mosques, and the Qutb Minar; the tallest brick minaret in the world.

5 nightsLEH

After 2 nights in Delhi, your Himalayan adventure begins in earnest, as you board a 90-minute flight to Leh. The capital of the former Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh, Leh enjoys a truly stunning location surrounded by the Himalayas, its central bustling bazaar surrounded by quiet streets and peaceful stupas. Your 5 nights in Leh will see you following the Shakti Ladakh guided walk, trekking between the villages of Stok, Shey, Nimmu, Likir and Igu, meeting local people and learning about their culture. Along the way, you’ll stay in traditional village houses, which have been renovated to be very comfortable while retaining their traditional charm and character. Walking through the valleys and mountain paths, past Tibetan-style temples and stupas and meeting local people, is a fantastic way to experience the Himalayas.

3 nightsSRINAGAR

After 5 days of trekking in the villages of Leh, you’ll board a 50-minute flight to Srinagar for the final leg of your journey. Characterised by gardens, houseboats, and rivers, Srinagar is the largest city in Jammu & Kashmir and is one of north India’s prettiest. An unstable political situation has seen it stay largely free of international tourist crowds, but it remains very popular with Indian holidaymakers and is the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir. Included in your trip is a walk through the old city, with sights such as the emerald-green Khanqah Shah-i-Hamadan mosque, Badshah Tomb, and the shrine of Makhdoom Sahib. You’ll also enjoy a ride on a shikara – a traditional wooden boat – on Dal Lake, a serene body of water which is the symbol of Srinagar; it’s known as the ‘Jewel in the Crown of Kashmir.’ You’ll spend your nights here on Dal Lake, too, in the beautiful Sukoon Houseboat, a luxurious wooden houseboat in an unrivalled position for gazing out over the lake.
