1 nightDELHI

Your Indian adventure begins in the country’s capital, Delhi, a maze of winding streets and bustling bazaars and a treasure trove of cultural and historical attractions. Among the city’s most famous and iconic sites are the Red Fort and Humayun’s Tomb, both of which reflect the centuries of rule under the mighty Mughals. The Qutb Minar towers at a whopping 73 metres, and is the tallest brick minaret in the world, and the Jantar Mantar, despite looking like a work of modern sculpture, is a huge sundial and observatory, dating from the 1700s and illustrating the innovations of medieval Islamic astronomy. You’ll spend your one night in Delhi at the Claridges, an elegant 1950s hotel a stone’s throw from the Gandhi Smriti museum.

3 nightsBANDHAVGARH

Your wildlife adventure begins in earnest with a flight to Jabalpur (1.5hrs) followed by a private transfer to Bandhavgarh, taking around 3 hours. You will spend 3 nights completely immersed in the wilderness at the beautiful Tree House Hideaway, a luxurious, chic rustic hotel set across a series of wooden boardwalks high in the forest canopy. The hotel is perfectly located for exploring the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, home to one of the highest densities in the world of critically endangered Bengal tigers. Many of the most iconic and photographed tigers in the world lived or live here, and you can hope to spot some of them on private game drives into the park; deer, wild boar and Indian gaur are among the other animals who live here.

3 nightsKANHA

The next stop on your wildlife journey is Kanha, where you’ll be taken by a 5-hour private road transfer. Supposedly the primary inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, Kanha is also home to an important population of Bengal tigers, who roam the lowland sal forests and rolling meadows which make up the park’s picturesque landscapes. As well as the tigers, the park is home to a reintroduced population of barasingha (or swamp deer), gaur, and rhesus macaques. As at Bandhavgarh, you can hope to spot all these animals and more on private game drives through the park. Your home for 3 nights in Kanha is the Kanha Earth Lodge, a collection of luxurious bungalows surrounded by the forest inspired by traditional Gond tribal architecture.

1 nightCALCUTTA

After 3 nights in the wilderness of Kanha, it’s time for another dose of city life as you head to Calcutta, India’s third-largest city and one of the country’s undoubted cultural capitals. Calcutta’s importance to the British East India Company is evident in its abundance of colonial buildings, some of which are beautifully preserved and retain their original civic functions; these include the General Post Office, Calcutta High Court and the opulent Victoria Memorial. Belur Math is an important religious centre with striking architecture featuring Hindu, Christian and Islamic motifs as a symbol of religious unity, and the potters’ quarter of Kumartuli is a great place to pick up one of Calcutta’s famous clay sculptures as a souvenir. You’ll spend one night at the Oberoi Grand, a regal hotel which itself is a prominent example of British colonial architecture.

3 nightsKAZIRANGA

The final stop on your Indian wildlife adventure is Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s most important wildlife sanctuaries. Here, you’ll find the highest density of tigers in the world, as well as Asian elephants and water buffalo. Most famously, Kaziranga is a sanctuary for the rare and endangered one-horned Indian rhinoceros, of which two thirds of the world’s entire population live in the park. You’ll spend the last 3 nights of your trip at Diphlu River Lodge, a luxurious eco-lodge built from wood and bamboo. Once again, you’ll spot animals on private game drives into the park, with other activities including dolphin safaris on the iconic Brahmaputra River, and cultural visits to nearby villages. After 3 nights at Diphlu, your Indian wildlife adventure reaches its end, and you’ll be transferred to Guwahati for your onward journey.
