2 nightsGOTHENBURG

Your holiday in Sweden begins in hip Gothenburg, referred to by locals as ‘little London’ thanks to its colourful cafés and world-class restaurants serving delicious fresh seafood, and a buzzing cultural scene, including an impressive art museum. The Liseberg amusement park has both vintage and modern rides that both young and old will love, and you can enjoy concerts in the gardens in summer and Christmas markets in winter. As well as its beautiful green spaces, there are numerous islands that can be easily visited from the city.

Despite its nickname and despite the fact it is Sweden’s second biggest city, Gothenburg has a rather smaller population than London’s (half a million), ensuring that it’s easy to find a secluded spot to call your own, whether that’s a hidden café or a quirky boutique on one of the squares or winding, cobbled streets, or a perfect island view.

Make the most of this cool city by staying in its heart, enjoying the elegant Nordic-style rooms and spectacular views at Upper House.

2 nightsFJALLBACKA

After picking up your car in Gothenburg, drive to the charming, quaint seaside village of Fjallbacka – a perfect base for exploring the islands of the archipelago, including coastal walks, hunting for crayfish and snorkelling and diving in crystal clear waters rich in marine life. Enjoy a scenic sail around the islands, observing seal colonies and watching out for several species of birds, and climb to the lookout point on the island of Ramna.

On your return to your hotel, the attractive Stora Hotellet Bryggan on the water’s edge in Fjallbacka, make a beeline for the inviting atmosphere of the bistro, where you can tuck into its gourmet food and linger over a drink or two as the sun sets over the horizon.

3 nightsKLADESHOLMEN

Today, drive to the pretty island of Kladesholmen, whose landscapes are peppered with red and white wooden houses. Known as the ‘herring island’, the fishing community here dates back to the 15th century (find out more in the island’s museum, Sillebua). The once flourishing herring industry here has now become just a few factories (from over 30 in its heyday), but herring is still very much on the delicious coast-inspired menu at the stylish Salt & Sill, Sweden’s first floating hotel, which is also a gourmet restaurant. As well as a variety of herring dishes, a range of other fresh seafood is on offer, from ryebread-fried mackerel to the catch of the day.

During your stay, we recommend a scenic cycle ride to Skarhamn to visit the renowned Nordic Watercolour Museum, and the equally scenic kayaking on offer in the pristine waters of the Bohuslan archipelago, including shallow straits that can only be reached by kayak. After exploring the natural playground on your doorstep, make the most of the hotel’s twist on a traditional Swedish pastime, and relax in the hotel’s floating sauna – a perfect way to unwind!
